Two goal salvo from Dixon
St. Brigids Blackwater 2-17 v 1-13 Adamstown
Two goals from Dillon Dixon helped the Intermediates to an all county hurling league division 2 victory on a windy but dry Blackwater on Sunday afternoon. The wind had a big influence on the goalies puc outs as Peters in the first half and Adamstowns in the second half were dropping into the respective full forward lines.
The lads were missing a number of players through injury while Adamstown were also missing a few first team regulars. The lads enjoyed a great first 10 minutes and were 1-03 up to no score with Dixon getting the goal. He got the ball in the corner rounded the back and soloed through to cooly flick to the net. Adamstown got there first score a minute later before Wayne won one of Peters long puc outs to score. Adamstown scored before Diarmuid repeated the puc out trick winning his own ball and scoring. Dixon and Diarmuid scored before an Adamstown free and then the Adamstown keeper had to be at his best making two good saves. We were completely on top at this stage with Mossie O’Brien performing particularly well in the half back line along with Eoin O’Neill making his intermediate league debut. The Adamstown goalie had to make another save 4 minutes later when Diarmuid shot well but Lillis was able to score the rebound. Adamstown scored two in a row from play before Dean Wright notched a free before half time to leave 7 between the sides.
With the wind at there backs in the second half it was Adamstown turn to win the long puc outs but Blackwater full back line coped well. The men from the Ross District scored two points before Diarmuid and Dean Wright played an excellent one two for Murphy to score,. Diarmuid broke through with 8 minutes gone and it was two on one but Diarmuids goal shot rose to go over the bar. The lads were on top at this stage with Diarmuid again scoring soloing through after he was pulled across. Adamstown scored two points in a row and with 12 left the lads looked comfortable but then disaster struck. The sliotar was failed to be cleared and a high ball in was caught well and struck to the net. 2 minutes later, Paul Murphy was unlucky not to goal with his low shot saved but Dixon did well to point the rebound. At this stage there was only 4 between the sides and they got through on goal but lucky for Blackwater Brian Dooley managed to block the shot. It was back to 3 with 3 minutes left with the men in black and amber had there tails up. Denis O’Brien finally got the lads first score in 7 minutes after Lillis found him free and then Dixon’s second goal, the full back caught a high ball in but Dean Whelan managed to get the hook and it hopped up lovely for Dixon who made no mistake. That was to be the final score of the game.
