Late score denys footballers win
St. Brigids Blackwater 2-06 v 0-12 Monageer/Boolavogue
A brilliant second half comeback by the Junior footballers in the championship was denied by a very late Monageer free. The first half was a forgettable affair with Blackwater just managing two points, and only one of those from play from a nice Dean Wright shot while Monageer managed 7 although mostly from frees. The lads though needed a big second half and managed to close the gap to 2 points with 17 minutes left when Diarmuid Murphy burst through to release Richard Blake who still had a bit of work to do but clinically finished low to the net. Another 3 minutes later, the game was down to 1 point and we were to take the lead. A second goal, this time Darren, whos direct running was causing Monageer all sorts of trouble, did all the hard work himself running from wing forward and finishing brilliantly to the top corner to lead the game by 2. The lads kept the men in red at bay but Monageer managed to score a late free with only a minute left on the clock before Dean Whelan had a brilliant chance to put the game back to 2 only to be denied by the post with 61 minutes gone on the clock. Unfortunately Monageer retained possession on the resulting kickout and won a precious free which their free taker duly dispatched. The lads will have a difficult game next against table toppers Rathgarogue/Cushinstown but there is plenty of optimism after the second half performance.
