Inters put in best performance in last game
St. Brigids Blackwater 1-17 v 0-16 Monageer/Boolavogue
Our lads finally put in the performance that we have nearly shown all year in this final group game which means that we finish 5th in the group and survive for another year, albeit thanks to Rathgarogue/Cushinstown defeating St. James.
It was Monageer who started the better and lead by 5 points to 2 with 13 minutes gone but for the next 17 minutes our lads were unbelievable, bringing a intensity that we have only seen in bits in the previous 4 games. First a Mick free, then Paul won the puc out handpassed to Topar to point. A Lillis free levelled the game before Monageer went in front again, but this was to be there last score of the half with 12 minutes left. A game changer, Diarmuid Murphy finally got a bit of space, bet his man and once Lar Lacey’s defender rushed at him, Diarmuid popped it over his head to the wily Lar Lacey who unmarked, had nothing to do but drive the ball low to the net. This gave our lads a sense of belief, three minutes later, we had three more scores, two Mick frees and Dean Whelan who was showing well from the front had us 5 in front. Another Mick free before Dean Whelan was involved again, passing to Topar who pointed to push it out to 6. Into added time Lillis knocked over two frees and a Lar Lacey point had us 9 points up at the break.
Facing into a strong wind. the lads brought back a sweeper to hold onto the precious lead as news filed through that Cushinstown were leading at the break which if it stayed that way we were safe. Lar Lacey left the field at half time with Nobbs entering the fray. Monageer started the half quick hitting two wides in a row before they knocked over two points before Dean Whelan got our first score with only 3 minutes gone. We started to sit deeper and Monageer were unlucky not to goal when Peter had to be at his best, knocking a shot over the bar. With 9 minutes gone, Diarmuid burst through again, only for unfortunately his shot was hit at the keeper who cleared up the field. He made amends a minute later scoring from the sideline before Dean Wright had the score back to 8 when Mick Lillis picked him out with a pin point cross field ball with still a tense 17 minutes left. Monageer enjoyed there best spell though and slowly came back into the game. They scored a free before a long ball in by Mick Lillis went all the way to the net only for unbelievably the referee disallowed the goal stating that Jake got a touch on it. A minute later, Nobbs nearly goaled as the ball creeped on the line but the lads couldnt get it in. The boys put in a serious defensive effort with Darren Byrne clearing a number of balls along with Ben Redmond who was moved to corner back but the Monageer were back to 4 points with 9 still left on the clock. What followed was hearts in mouths stuff as Mick finally put 4 between the teams to put it back to 4 with just two minute of normal time left and then he pushed it out to 5 but amazingly the refereee played 8 minutes over time. With 5 minutes over Monageer scored a free to put it back to 4 but that was as close as they got as they couldnt get the goals needed. News filtered through then that Cushinstown had won their game and our lads had survived with Monageer who were in 4th at the start of the day, now in relegation.
