Intermediates defeat Ballygarrett
Ballygarrett 0-16 v 3-17 Blackwater
Goals win games but the lads hurled well in every department as they enjoyed a good win over the men from the macamores in the all county hurling league. The lads were missing a large number of players and could only call on two subs on the bench. But it gave an opportunity to some of our younger players and they didn’t disappoint with the half back alone scoring 1-02.
The lads were out of the blocks quickly scoring 3 points in a row before Ballygarrett responded. Diarmuid was unlucky not to goal when he made a brilliant solo through but the keeper managed to pull off a good save. We had another goal chance after 9 minutes when Topar received the ball in space but he put it over the bar for the lads to lead by 2. Ballygarrett though had there best spell outscoring us over the next 10 minutes 5 points to 1 with Jack Hobbs enjoying a lot of influence in the middle of the pitch. They moved 2 ahead before Aaron was unlucky not to goal pulling first time on the ground and it drifted over the bar to get his first ever intermediate score. If he was unlucky with the first goal shot, the finish a few minutes later was sublime, finding himself yet again in front of the goal and from an extremely difficult angle driving the ball low to the net, an excellent finish from the wing back. Diarmuid and a Ballygarrett free was topped then by Ben Redmond the other wing back getting on the score sheet. A late Ballygarrett free left 2 between the sides at the turn.
A Topar and then a Din Brien score settled the lads into the second half before Diarmuid Murphy pushed the scores out to 6 when Shane O’Leary found space, burst through and hand passed across to Diarmuid who pulled low to the net. Three minutes later, Topar got in on the act on what was a brilliant move. Nobbs hitting a cross field ball to Diarmuid who won it and hit across to Topar who was bearing down on goal and couldnt miss as he drilled to the net. Unfortunately he injured himself in the process and had to be replaced by Paddy Cullen, earning his first appearance in intermediate ranks. With only 13 minutes left, Diarmuid was unlucky not to add to his goal tally when shooting for a certain goal only to see it go wide. A couple of Nobbs frees wedged between some Ballygarrett scores saw the match getting a bit niggley with a red card shown to one of our players and a Ballygarrett player. So all in all a good team performance with the next game the much anticipated Leinster league final fixed for Sunday week at 2pm in Athy.
