Heroic defensive effort wins local clash for U14s
Oulart The Ballagh 0-07 v 1-07 Blackwater
To call the second half performance by the U14s heroic would be an understatement! The boys battled for every ball winning nearly every individual battle to inflict Oulart The Ballaghs first defeat this year. And even more astonishing was that 5 of the starting team are still U12.
The boys elected to play with the gale force wind in the 1st half and struck a score within the first minute with a Brian Og free while Brian Og made it two a minute later with a nice low ball from Ollie Murphy. Oulart responded almost immediately before Ollie got on the scoreboard with a point from distance. Brian Og was unlucky not to goal when he got by the full back only to see his shot get blocked by the goalies helmet and the follow up shot also blocked. But 2 minutes later he was dragged down before he managed to get the shot away and the referee had no choice but to award the penalty. Oge buried it into the bottom corner. After a frantic first 5 minutes, you would be forgiven to think that the boys would keep scoring but it was Oulart who responded, pointing a minute later and holding the boys to just one point, a Brian Og free in the next 13 minutes before Oulart responded again. Brian Og pointed just before half time to leave just 5 in it at the turn.
A huge task lay ahead in the second half with the wind they were facing and the management team deployed Seamus to act as a sweeper. Oulart had 2 quick points on board with only 2 minutes gone but what followed can only be classified as a ‘Thou shall not pass’ in every sense of the word with Oularts next score not coming for another 24 minutes. In that time there were so many blocks, individual battles and everyone in the defence worked as a unit each set to there task of stopping their man getting away a goal bound shot. Wallace finally gave the boys some breathing room with only 2 minutes left to put the score out to 4 between the teams with a free into the breeze from 40 yards out. Oulart won a free into extra time and dropped it in but yet again the boys managed to clear there lines. The referee blew the final whistle on the clearance much to the delight of the large Blackwater following and management team. A good win but still plenty of matches to be played yet in this Division 2.
