Strong last 10 sees Minors win

MHC: Ferns 1-07 v Blackwater 3-12

A strong last 10 minutes saw out minor hurlers get over the line against a stubborn Ferns team on Sunday morning. Ferns played with the very strong wind in the first half but our lads started the better with Kealan unlucky not to goal and also we had a few wides in the first 5 minutes. It was not until the 7th minute that we pointed after all the pressure with a free from Brian Og and then we hit three quick points in a row with Ross, Seamus and Johnny pointed. Ferns with the aid of the wind started to grow into the game and had two points of their own before they took the lead with a hard shot from outside the 30 to the top corner. Our lads though to their credit got back level with Seamus pointing before we took the lead again when Jimmy Whelan soloed from the sideline and shot across goal with Ross tapping to the net. Ferns scored a point before half time to leave the scores level with our lads having the advantage of the wind for the second 30.

The second half started like the first with our lads enjoying a large amount of possession but unfortunately it wasn’t turning into scores. Ferns took the lead from a free with 10 gone but an Adam Murphy 65, then Brian Og free had us in the lead. With just 10 minutes left on the clock we still only had a slender lead but that changed when Brian Og did brilliantly to sidestep the corner back and lost his marker to drill high to the net, giving the goalie no chance in the goal. A Óge free a minute later pushed us 5 in front before an outstanding goal by Johnny O’Toole soloing by his marker, flicking to over the corner backs head and pulling low to the net. A Brian Og free, then Seamus and a long range Adam Murphy point from 70m line put the gloss on the final scoreline. Next week we return to football when we play Buffers Alley.
