Blackwater 0-12 v 0-08 Eire Og Chorra Choill
The Intermediates secured a 4 point victory in awful conditions in a wet and extremely windy Pairc Naomh Brid on Saturday afternoon in the Leinster League. The lads had lost out to Black and Whites, Kilkenny last week so needed a victory this week to stay in the hunt against a team who defeated us in last years Leinster League Final.
Our lads played against a gale force wind in the first half but we started the better of the two teams, with Shane scoring from near the sideline while a Mick free had us two up to no score after 4 minutes. Things could of been ever better had Seanie Purcells ground pull not found its way to the net only for the keeper managed to pull off a good save. Eire Og were level by the 10 minute but both teams were finding chances difficult to come by with Blackwater backs putting in a strong performance under constant pressure. It wasn’t until the 16 minute that Eire Og pulled ahead but Blackwater were lucky a few minutes earlier when a sideline cut was tipped on by an Eire Og forward and Peter had to dive at full stretch to save it. Seanie and Blake combined well a few minutes later to level again before Eire Og and Dean Wright swapped points. They scored their first from play just before half time to lead by one but our lads would have the strong wind in the second half.
Eire Og scored their second point from play within a minute but we were back level after two Lillis frees before another Mick free pushed us finally into the lead, one we wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the match with only 8 minutes gone. The match continued in the same vain with three more frees, two from Mick and one from Dean pushed it out to 4 and then with 6 minutes to go, an Eire Og player saw red for removing Feidhlims helmet. The lads saw out the game with a late Lillis free securing the points. It was a difficult game and one that will be quickly forgotten due to the tough nature of the conditions but the backs really showed up well limiting the away team to just two points from play with Feidhlim and Ben Redmond both putting in strong performances. Shane in the first half made a number of crucial blocks while Paul made some strong runs from centre forward. The lads have a winner takes all clash in two weeks time against Ballinamire from Offaly to secure the final qualification spot.
