14 point win for U16s in Championship
Ballynestragh Gaels 4-09 v 4-23 St. Brigids Blackwater
This game was decided within 5 minutes of the second half as lads pulled away with an exhibition of long range scoring including Pad O’Connor finishing with a total of 1-12. The game started at a frantic pace with the Gaels bagging there first goal inside 3 minutes. The lads responded with 3 quick points before Johnny O’Toole as he has so often done soloed from midfield to goal. Things got even better a minute late, this time Johnny the provider a quick pass to the excellent Pad O’Connor to shot low to the net from 20 yards out. Another two minutes later, Ollie got in on the act goaling to leave 10 between the side. If you thought the game was over, Ballynestragh didn’t think so as they staged a comeback, scoring 2-03 widged between a solitary Pad point to leave just a point in it with 8 left. Mossy and a Pad score from midfield left just 3 between the sides, hard to believe considering the lads dominance with 15 gone.
Some positional changes at half time really made the difference with Jonathan Blake tasked with a man marking job on the Gaels main player while Pad was moved to midfield and Mossy to centre forward. Johnny O’Toole pointed within a minute before the restart and then Mossy won the puc out, soloed towards goal and unselfishly passed to his brother Ollie who finished very well low to the net. At this stage Adam Murphy was giving an exhibition at full back clearing umpteen balls downfield to Pad and Johnny who were completely on top in the middle. For the next 15 minutes was an exhibition of long distance scoring with a number of points picked off at all over the pitch with Pad showing excellent quality on the frees. Kilanerin/Ballfad-Tara Rocks did score a goal with 10 left but any chance of a revival was stopped by three more Blackwater scores before the end.
So the lads head into the break with two wins and just that one defeat against Slaney Gaels so plenty to to look forward to when the championship resumes.
